The November meeting will be held on Sunday, November 22, at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph room of the parish center at St. Gertrude Parish in Madeira. Our guest speaker, Fr. Luke Waugh, OSB, will address the topic “Oblation and Vocation: A Benedictine Model for Discernment.” It will be nice to see Fr. Luke again. The last time he visited our chapter meeting was before his recent ordination. This will give us the opportunity to congratulate him.
On the reverse side you will find a Prayer for All Deceased Oblates of the Chapter. Please bring this with you to the meeting next Sunday; we will pray this prayer for all the deceased members of our chapter.
The December 11-13 oblate retreat at Saint Meinrad features Fr. Harry Hagen, OSB, speaking on the topic “People Called in the Bible.” Because of the renovations and repairs underway at the monastery, however, the only rooms available at Saint Meinrad will be in the Guest House. If you have not already made your reservations, it may be difficult to find a room.
The Day of Recollection for Ohio oblates is being held in Dayton this year on May 21. Fr. Adrian Burke, OSB, will speak on “Let Them Prefer Nothing Whatever to Christ.” This is a wonderful opportunity for the Ohio oblates to spend the day together reflecting on our vocation as oblates of St. Benedict. You won’t want to miss this, so please mark your calendars.
Fr. Adrien Burke is the featured speaker at the June 13-16 Oblate Study Days at Saint Meinrad. “The Benedictine Way to a Spirituality of Imperfection,” is the topic of the study days.
There is no meeting next month due to the December oblate retreat at Saint Meinrad. Therefore, I take this opportunity to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving, a blessed Christmas, and a Happy New Year.
The January meeting will be held January 24, 2016.

Cincinnati Oblate Chapter Minutes
October 25, 2015
Attendance:

Introductions and reading of the Mission Statement opened our meeting. Second Sunday Vespers of Week Two was prayed together. Lectio Divina was shared together using Mark 10: 46-52.
The Minutes of September 27 were approved.
Nick McCarroll says that our current chapter balance is $10.00.
New/Old Business:
John Campbell was able to attend Mary Steidle’s funeral. Thank you, John! John Rasche has transferred his Oblate membership from the Louisville chapter to our Cincinnati chapter. Welcome, John!
Video Conference:
Praying the Psalms by Fr. Harry Hagan, OSB
Fr. Harry explains three ways of understanding the poetry of the psalms:
1) Relating to the text from inside the text and just take it as it is.
2) Relating to the text from outside the text by asking questions about culture and repetitions of ideas.
3) Relating by standing between texts when we find connections between Christ and the psalms, between the Patristic fathers and the psalms, between other Scripture texts and the psalms.
Using Psalm 130, Fr. Harry explains that heart refers in Hebrew to the person or the mind whereas in Hebrew to feel is with the gut. There is a parallelism between the psychological and spiritual dimensions in this psalm. In Psalm 133, Fr. Harry suggests that we connect the psalm to the text of our own life.
Psalm 113 begins and ends with God’s people thanking God for his steadfast covenant love in contrast to those who make an idol of themselves and experience no loving trust in our Lord’s faithful mindfulness.

We were pleased to welcome Bro. Peduru Fonseka, OSB as the guest speaker at our September meeting. Bro. Peduru spoke about our vocation to become an oblate of Saint Meinrad and how it was a call from within that brought us to this community. Ron DeMarco gives a wonderful summary of Bro. Peduru’s talk in the Minutes of the September meeting.
The October 25 meeting will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph Room of the St. Gertrude Parish Center. As we will cover Conference #2 of Praying and Singing the Psalms with Fr. Harry Hagen, please remember to bring your book to the meeting.
We would like to welcome Deacon John Lyons to our chapter. Deacon John made his final oblation at Saint Meinrad on September 23. We also welcome John Rasche from Bonnyman, KY, who joined us at our September meeting.
We have had several recent prayer requests. Please pray for Joel, who is in a coma following a serious car accident, and for Bill Neal (husband of Dayton oblate Marianna Neal) who is scheduled for a biopsy later this month. Also, please remember oblate Mary Steidle and her sister, Sr. Jeannette Frisch, OSB, both of whom are in failing health. Cards can be mailed to the at the following addresses:

Our meeting opened with reading of the Mission Statement. Second Sunday Vespers of Week Two was prayed together. Lectio Divina was shared together using Mark 9: 38-43, 45, 47-48.
The Minutes of the April 26 meeting were approved.
Nick McCarroll stated that our current chapter balance is $4.00. We owe $75.00 to Br. Peduru for today’s visit.
New Business: Pat Dorn let us know that Clyde was not there this afternoon because he is not feeling well. We will pray for him. Ron Clark requested that someone else take over the responsibility for the oblate library. Please let him know if you are interested. Ron DeMarco reported that the Saint Meinrad Oblate Council is meeting to prepare for the Meeting of Chapter Coordinators which is planned for June of 2017.
Conference: "Understanding oblation as a vocation" or "A Call from within" by Brother Peduru Fonseka, OSB
Br. Peduru opened his presentation with a question, asking us each to tell him how we decided to be an oblate. There were many answers from the group: being invited to come to a chapter meeting, Lectio Divina convinced me, a visit to Saint Meinrad Archabbey, being with other oblates, something to make sense of all these complications in life.
Br. Peduru read aloud the signed promises made by all oblates. It's a promise in front of God and all the saints and a sense of community with Saint Meinrad Archabbey. In committee with Fr. Meinrad and other oblates we make the promises. The promises are like the final vows of the monks at Saint Meinrad. So there is a community aspect in both oblates and monks with God and the saints. God is the central reason that brought us to this community. All of us had something within that needed to be fulfilled. The invitation from God that we responded to brought us to this community, looking for God. Answering that invitation was answering the "Call from within."
We all wish to get closer to God. We believe that God will help us with a greater understanding of the meaning of life. And so we need to look at life through the lens of God. This way of life helps us put things in perspective. In the story of the Prodigal Son, the father welcomed the wayward son with outstretched arms. God called us in the same way to be His witness. And we responded with our commitment of a year of study to become an oblate.
In a retreat given by the bishop of Barbados, he outlined the following four steps we go through to discern our vocation:
1). The invitation from God
2). Our response to the invitation
3). Listening to our conscience to reflect on the vocation and connect to the spiritual aspect
4). Our human development, integrating spiritual good with the natural good. Essentially rising to a level where we become one with the values we embrace as Christians. We become living examples of those Christian values.
God helps us to do this when our lives are centered around him. He is always with us to give us the wisdom and strength to go beyond all obstacles and answer the call from within.

Hello,
everyone. We are looking forward to
seeing everyone again after the long summer break.
Our
first meeting for 2015-2016 will be held on Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Joseph
Room of the St. Gertrude Parish Center.
Please note the
location change. Unfortunately,
we are unable to host this meeting at our home this year as we are in the midst
of remodeling our bathroom. Pray for us!
The
guest speaker for this meeting is Br. Peduru Fonseka, OSB. Br. Peduru’s topic is “A Call Within;
Understanding Oblation as a Vocation.”
As
I was looking through my oblate folder, I came across the attached sheet
regarding “Indulgences for Oblates.” It
was an interesting reminder for me, and I thought you might appreciate it, too. The new year will be here before you know it,
and you might want to add these dates to your 2016 calendar.
