In addition to our guest speaker, Fr. Meinrad Brune, OSB, we will are pleased to welcome our new
oblate director, Janis Dopp to our meeting on Sunday, February 26. As usual, the meeting will be held
in the St. Joseph room of the St. Gertrude Parish Center at 2:00 p.m.
Fr. Meinrad will speak on the
topic of “Holiness and Benedictine Spirituality.”
The March 20-22 Oblate Retreat at Saint Meinrad Archabbey will feature Fr. Eugene Hensell, OSB, as the
presenter. The title of the retreat is “The Way of the Cross According to the Gospel of Matthew.” If you are
planning to attend and have not yet made your reservations, it would be a good idea to do so as soon as possible.
Don’t forget to return your Lenten Bona Opera. I am reminding you because I just remembered to mail ours
today.
Ash Wednesday seems to be sneaking up rather quickly this year!

Cincinnati Oblate Chapter Minutes
January 22, 2017
Attendance:
Clyde Dorn, Pat Dorn, Rosemary Conrad, Ron DeMarco, John Campbell, Peyton Reed, Mary Louise Reed, Susan Anderson, John Rashe, Linda Faulhaber, Kathy Gloeckner, Beverly Winner.
Introductions and reading of the Mission Statement opened our meeting. Second Sunday Vespers of Week Three was prayed together. Lectio Divina was shared together using Matthew 4:12-23.
The Minutes of November, 2016 were approved. Rosemary reported for Nick McCarroll that our treasury balance as of today is $45.00.
New/Old Business:
Pat Dorn will make corrections to a couple of email addresses on the Cincinnati Chapter Oblate Directory and send out the corrected list. There was a discussion about if we wish to chant the psalms, or combine chanting some and reciting some. Rosemary received concern from some that they cannot sing (chant) and it makes them feel left out if they do not sing with the group. After much discussion, there was sensitivity for both those who do wish to chant and for those who cannot. Because it is tradition by the monks and to follow their lead to chant, it was voted to continue chanting. However, Peyton will continue to guide us and coach anyone who wants his help at the meeting.
Video Presentation by Fr Harry Hagan, OSB. The Catholic Way of Interpretation, Conference #3. Father Harry spoke from pages 8 through page 10 of our handout titled Praying and Singing the Psalms. The writings are from John Cassion who lived in the later part of 300AD, and goes to Palestine and becomes a Deacon. He writes about the 4 types of prayer: supplications, offerings, petitions, and thanksgiving. The fifth type he wrote about is called fiery prayer, which is described as being so wholeheartedly caught up in prayer, it becomes fiery with great feeling and with a boundless joy. Fr. Harry says that Cassion ends with what he feels is the most important type prayer, “offerings” where we make a vow to do something important to us. Being an oblate, or marriage partner, or worker, etc. It is to “Live out” what we said we were going to do with our lives. There we will be united with God. It all comes back to living the way in which we are faithful to our vow.

January 2017 Newsletter

The January meeting will be held on Sunday, January 22 in the St. Joseph Room of the parish center at St. Gertrude in Madeira. We will be continuing with the video of Fr. Harry Hagen’s Conference #3: The Catholic Way of Interpretation, beginning with Psalm 129 on page 7 of the Praying and Singing the Psalms booklet. Rosemary will have handout sheets for those who do not have a booklet. We are looking forward to seeing everyone.
It has been a long time (2 months) since our last meeting! The Cincinnati Oblates offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to Fr. Meinrad Brune for all he has done for the oblates and the oblate program at Saint Meinrad during the 21 years he has served as oblate director. He will be sorely missed. As Rosemary announced at the November meeting, Janis Dopp has been selected to replace Fr. Meinrad as Oblate Director. In addition, Fr. Joseph Cox, OSB, has assumed the position of Oblate Chaplain. Fr. Meinrad will continue in his position until June and is working with Fr. Joseph and Janis Dopp on a smooth transition. We look forward to working with both Janis and Fr. Joseph.
Our Chapter will be hosting the Ohio Day of Recollection on May 20. The theme of the Day of Recollection is “The Heart of Benedictine Spirituality.” Br. Francis Wagner, OSB, will be the speaker, and Fr. Meinrad Brune, OSB, will be present as well. Rosemary will bring us up to date on this at our meeting on Sunday.

November 20, 2016

Introductions and reading of the Mission Statement opened our meeting. Second Sunday Vespers of Week Two was prayed together. The names of the deceased oblates of the Cincinnati chapter were read and prayed for.
Lectio Divina was shared together using Luke 23:35-43.The Minutes of October, 2016 were approved. Nick McCarroll reported our balance after contributions for last month is $75.00 and that will be paid to Br. Simon for coming to be with us today. Nick also reported that our chapter received a donation of $25.00 from Ron Beathand.
New/Old Business:
Pat Dorn reported that she is working on a directory of names, and is checking for phone numbers and addresses for those names that do not have these on record presently. Rosemary asked us to think about when we do vespers if we wish to chant the psalms, or combine chanting some and reciting some. Ron DeMarco reported on his trip to the Memphis chapter with Fr. Meinrad to give testimony on why he is an oblate.

Brother Simon shared his journey to the monastery and different signs throughout his early life, high school (attending OBOC as a participant), college (intern for OBOC for 3 summers), and post-college (worked at Saint Meinrad for 3 years as a lay person). He has said “yes” to monastic life, but he continues to realize what his “yes” means and continues to say “yes” as he learns and grows as a monk. His “yes”, and all of our “Yes’s” are ongoing.

Lectio Divina was shared together using Luke 18:9-14.
The Minutes of September, 2016 were
approved.
Nick McCarroll reported our balance before today’s collection is $-12.55.
New/Old Business:
Fr. Meinrad sent a letter to all chapter coordinators that he is stepping down at the end of the
MCC (meeting of chapter coordinators) to be held in mid-June 2017. An Executive Oblate
Director will replace him to be chosen from the oblate members, and an Oblate Director will be
chosen from the monastery members to assist with spiritual responsibilities. A second issue was
a reminder about finances that we need to decide how to have a more steady balance in our
treasury. The suggestion was to collect $5.00 from each member at each chapter meeting. That
amount of revenue would cover the expenses that we incur each month. Pat mentioned that she
put together a list of names and addresses for the mailing of Christmas cards.
Our video presentation was by Fr. Harry Hagan, OSB, “The Catholic Ways of
Interpretation,” Conference #3.
Fr. Harry said that the Vatican Council II declared that the elements of our Catholic faith are
scripture, which is human words communicating the Word of God, and tradition, which are the
practices of our Catholic faith handed down generation by generation that keep alive this life we
live in Christ.
The Catholic Church supports that there is no conflict between science and theology. More
specifically that there is no opposition of the theory of evolution and our doctrine of faith.
Fundamentalists may be against the theory of evolution.
The New Testament is about the life of Christ and the Old Testament adds to who Jesus is.
